Water scarcity causes farmers suffer losses

The water availability for irrigation in Cepoko, Magetan, became scarce as the previous dry season has made the river shrunk and almost dried up. It resulted in the planting period to be postponed. Even the farmers are suffering losses.

“Some of the farmers and I have gone through the harvest period since August. However, due to the scarcity of water for irrigation, we have not been able to plant crops and are suffering losses,” said Hartono (50), one of the farmers.

Since entering the transitional season, the low-intensity of rain has continued. However, the rainwater was still not enough to irrigate all of the farmers’ fields.

According to Hartono, some of the farmers in Cepoko undertook odd jobs in other unaffected areas to earn income. Several farmers also sold their livestock as they needed money to survive.

“There is no help from the government regarding the problem of water scarcity in our village. Hence, we can only hope it rains a lot soon,” added Hartono.
