Paralayang Hill becomes ‘new normal’ tourist attraction in Karanganyar

Paralayang Hill is not empty of visitors despite the pandemic. On the contrary, the hill located at the foot of Mount Lawu has an explosion of visitors during the new normal. Offering a beautiful view and fresh air, Paralayang Hill becomes one of the favorite destinations in Karanganyar, Central Java.

The exact location of Paralayang Hill is in Segoro Gunung, Ngargoyoso Karanganyar, precisely between Cetho and Sukuh temple areas. It is surrounded by beautiful tea gardens and has typical fresh mountain air. Due to the beauty of nature and the enticement of paragliding, Paralayang Hill is popular among visitors. Even they are willing to travel a quite difficult route to get to Paralayang Hill in the middle of the pandemic.

“At the beginning of the pandemic, the number of visitors dropped. However, after the new normal started, the number increased dramatically. There are visitors from around Karanganyar, East Java, Jogja, and other regions,” said Angga Kharismawati, a resident who has a store near Paralayang Hill.

According to Angga Kharismawati, the most popular activities in Paralayang Hill are camping and paragliding. The other events and activities are Saturday night events, campfires, live music, outbound, and an event to celebrate the Independence Day of Indonesia.

To enter Paralayang Hill, visitors have to pay Rp3.000,00 for each person. With the affordable price, visitors can enjoy the beautiful and soothing view from the altitude of 1300 masl. However, Rp3000,00 doesn’t include the fee to do activities. Visitors need to pay more if they want to camp or do paragliding.

“It costs Rp15.000,00 each person to camp in Paralayang Hill, Rp350.000,00 for paragliding, and Rp35.000,00 to Rp40.000,00 for those who want to rent a tent with a capacity of 4-5 people,” said Nur Yahya, the owner of Janu Outbound, who provides camping equipment rental and tour packages.

People can visit Paralayang Hill every day. However, the paragliding activity only opens on the weekend, holiday, or if there is a group of people who book it in advance.

With a lot of visitors coming during new normal, Ngargoyoso authorities set a strict regulation regarding the health protocols.

“The police do check from time to time whether or not people obey the protocols. So, we have to keep wearing a mask and maintaining physical distancing,” Angga Kharismawati explained.
